In recent decades, popular culture has spread a false idea of a sentimental relationship between Saint Mary Magdalene, whose feast the Church celebrates every July 22, and Jesus Christ. But a thirteenth-century Dominican blessed indicates that in reality the saint would have been the girlfriend of one of the Apostles.
In the book the golden legendon the lives of the saints, the Blessed Santiago de la Vorágine (1230-1298), Bishop of Genoa (Italy), collects a very old tradition in which it is said that Saint Mary Magdalene was engaged to Saint John the Evangelist.
When they were “about to get married”, says the blessed, Christ made him the vocational call to San Juan, who at that time was with his brother Santiago. The Apostles, leaving his father and the laborers in the boat, began to follow the Lord.
Mary Magdalene was greatly upset with Jesus for having taken her fiancé from her and for that reason she left her home. The young woman, continues the story of Bishop Santiago de La Vorágine, gave herself up to a “riotous life”.
However, the Prelate disagrees with the possibility that she has lost her virginity and rather leans towards the approach expressed in another text, the Proem to the Gospel of Saint John.
According to the bishop, there the author, named Fray Alberto, points out that “the young woman with whom Juan was going to marry, and with whom he did not marry because Christ called him to the apostolate shortly before the marriage was celebrated, always remained a virgin”.
“When John joined Jesus, she associated herself with the Virgin Mary, in whose company she was later seen by the people,” and “she retained her virginity until death,” added the Dominican.
It is necessary to indicate that in the Bible there is no reference to the possible sentimental relationship of both saints. But the Church does believe that Mary Magdalene left the life of sin, converted and became an extraordinary disciple of hers. So much so that the Lord first appeared to her after resurrecting from her.
