Actress and presenter Whoopi Goldberg shocked many when she claimed yesterday that the Holocaust “was not related to race.”
During a conversation on the show she presents, “The View” regarding the decision of certain districts in Tennessee not to teach the graphic novel “Mouse” that teaches about the Holocaust, Goldberg said of the Holocaust that “it was whites who did it to whites. The Holocaust is not related to race.” Goldberg argued that the Holocaust was an event of “inhumanity of human beings towards other human beings. Both groups were white.”
When Goldberg said these things, some of the participants in the program attacked her, emphasizing that the Nazis saw Jews as a separate race and that the Nazis believed in “white supremacy” when they exterminated Jews and gypsies. The panel members made it clear that the Nazis did not see the Jews as “white.”
“Racism has been a central part of Nazi ideology,” the American Holocaust Museum said in a statement. “Jews were not defined according to their religion, but according to race. Nazi racism led to genocide.”
The director general of the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, also attacked the remarks, saying: “Not Whoopi Goldberg, the Holocaust was a systematic murder of Jews, whom the Nazis saw as an inferior race. “Distorting the Holocaust is a dangerous thing.”
Following the public attack against her, Goldberg was forced to apologize on Twitter: “On today’s program I said that the Holocaust is not about race but about inhumanity. I should have said it was both. I admit I was wrong, Jews around the world always knew I supported them. I’m sorry for the pain. That I caused. “
