It doesn’t take long for Hartwig Raeder to come to his favorite topic: the kidney. He has been writing articles about the organ on Wikipedia for 15 years. He is the main author of many of them. “You can donate a kidney here in Germany, put it in a plastic bag and transport it across Europe for three days,” he says, emphasizing their resilience. “And sometimes it even works better for the recipient than for the donor.” Raeder himself does not carry out transplants. He works as a general practitioner in his own practice. There is still more than enough work to do here. And make money. “The bottom line is that I’m roughly in the salary bracket of the Federal Chancellor,” he says. That’s around 30,000 euros gross per month.

Raeder also works above average for this. He takes on a number of 24-hour on-call duties for doctors in the area and earns twice as much: he receives his regular salary and is paid several hundred euros per shift by gynecologists, orthopedists and dermatologists who don’t want to work. In some weeks his calculated working time approaches the 168 hours that a week has a maximum.
