The Germans should also take a siesta, doctors are demanding. But in Spain everyone knows that this is more of a curse than a blessing. And more dangerous is the heat at a completely different time of the day.

Those who are not yet on vacation in Spain can retreat to a long siesta these days. Since the beginning of the week, the second major heat wave has rolled over the country with temperatures of almost 45 degrees in Andalusia on Monday.

But for many Spaniards, the long lunch break is more of a curse than a blessing. Because they have long been working in air-conditioned offices and companies, which nevertheless close at least between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., often even longer. If you can’t go home, you have to see how you can bridge the prescribed free time. Bosses like to use them for extended business lunches. The remaining employees often have no choice but to stop off at an air-conditioned restaurant at their own expense.
