With the start of the pre-season training of the club teams, a different approach to training is noticeable in Liverpool.

Last week, the club’s YouTube channel released a short video of players returning to training. One particular moment that caught the eye was during Liverpool’s goalkeeping practice. New goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte asked 21-year-old Marcelo Pitaluga to wear a pair of American-designed Swivel Vision training glasses, which limit peripheral vision and force people to do more visual tracking or use sounds around them.

How does this approach benefit goalkeepers?

Training goggles are designed to improve players’ reactions, hand-eye coordination and technical skills by limiting the amount of visual input they receive during a particular session.

The bottom line is that the greater the challenge in training, the easier it should be to replicate similar actions during the match.

Compared to other advanced technology entering football, these glasses only cost $30.

Most importantly, their use is based on scientific principles.

As well as a UEFA goalkeeping licence, goalkeeping coach Otte holds a PhD in modern football goalkeeping skills training from the German Sports University of Cologne and has published numerous scientific papers on the subject, so it’s likely that these weird glasses would really improve goalkeeper reflexes.
