On the night of August 12, the least patient amateur astronomers will still have the opportunity to see shooting stars, provided that light pollution does not hide their light in the sky.

If they are visible all year round, shooting stars are more numerous in August. The Night of the Stars, which generally falls between August 11 and 13, marks a peak of activity: it is then possible to see several dozen per hour. And in 2023, the conditions for watching them are optimal since it is a moonless night.

Shooting stars are actually not “stars” but meteors: debris from asteroids or comets. The size of a grain of sand or a small rock, they only glow for a few seconds.

Why do we see them from Earth? Why can we see so many of them at this time of year?

Our explanations in this one-minute video, from our account on TikTok. If you want to know more, we refer you to this post written by the scientist Guillaume Cannat on the blog Around Heaven.
