Berlin – Berlin’s subway network is set to grow. In the discussion about the expansion of the most heavily used means of local transport, a project in the west of the city has come to the fore. It is about extending the U7 subway line from Spandau town hall to the Heerstraße Nord development area. In an interview with the Berliner Zeitung, mobility senator Bettina Jarasch (Greens) spoke out in favor of tackling this project. In fact: Of all the possible new subway routes that the Senate had examined, the western extension of the U7 could attract the most passengers. The route, which at 31.8 kilometers is already Berlin’s longest subway line, would grow by more than four kilometers. Spandau’s building councilor Thorsten Schatz (CDU) is now calling for another subway project to be considered in the westernmost district of Berlin. Criticism, however, comes from the Berlin passenger association IGEB.
