Why car air conditioning smells bad: reasons and how to fix it

by time news

It’s summer. Much of the time is spent on the beach or in the pool looking for refreshing water after a hard hot day. But it’s time to pick up the towel and get in the car to go home. Suddenly, that feeling of freshness disappears in a matter of seconds because the car has been in the sun for a long time. As soon as it starts, the driver’s immediate action is to turn the air conditioning to the maximum level to return to being comfortable. But everything is cut short when an unpleasant smell runs through the vehicle and it almost pays more to open the windows than to maintain the cooling system.

This problem is usually a fairly common problem and is especially accentuated on these dates. It originates inside the vehicle, specifically in the ventilation ducts, and it is a sign that it is time to clean them. Because if the car is a few years old, it is normal for mold, the result of humidity, to flood these channels and, with it, hundreds of microbes responsible for the bad stench.

Another cause is poor maintenance of the ventilation filter, which the vast majority of cars have to clean the air coming from outside. If not cleaned frequently, this item can also accumulate bacteria which also gives off a stench.

How to remove the bad smell

If you are not a ‘handyman’ and you prefer to get rid of these odors as soon as possible and without complications, it is best to go to a workshop and in a matter of minutes they will solve it, since it does not require tools or expensive spare parts.

But if, on the other hand, you want to save yourself that appointment with the mechanic and end this disappointment yourself, you should know that it is very simple.

Just go to a specialized vehicle maintenance center. There you will find a wide variety of sprays designed with this sole purpose. In addition, their price is between 10 and 15 euros, so they are quite affordable and can be used on several occasions.

Once you have purchased the spray, you should first clean the air gaps with brushes or swabs to remove accumulated dust. Once cleaned, the heating must be activated for about five minutes to eliminate the traces of moisture.

Finally, apply the spray (which will have a long nozzle) in the air ducts and then turn on the air conditioning at full power and wait another five minutes outside the vehicle. Remember to always do these steps with the windows down.
