Daniel Sancho – the confessed murderer of Colombian doctor Edwin Arrieta – appeared this Friday for the first time at the hearing, which aims to try him for the crimes of intentional homicide and concealment of evidence, without lawyers.

The hearing was of a routine nature and in it the court of Samui (Thailand) had to extend the prisoner’s provisional detention regime. The curious thing about this meeting, which was virtual, is that the alleged murderer came without the company of a lawyer.

The 29-year-old Spaniard has been left without a defender since last September 7. The rules of that country require that defenses be made by lawyers born in Asia in trials, which is why he had hired the services of Thai Hunh Anan.

However, the family of the confessed criminal detailed that Sancho had had “discrepancies in defense” with Anan’s services.

From Spain, Sancho is supported by the Marcos García-Montes law firm, who assured that they will work to define the arguments and gather evidence to defend the accused.

Anan managed to represent Sancho from the moment of his capture until last September 7. The Thai Police will have until October 28 to conclude the investigation of the case and deliver the evidence to the Prosecutor’s Office. Sancho will have the same period to find a Thai lawyer, otherwise they will appoint one ex officio.

The crime of the Colombian doctor was known on August 5. The investigation showed that the Spaniard beat the doctor until he was unconscious, gave him a fatal wound in the abdomen and then dismembered the body to try to hide the crime.
