Determined but resigned, activists of the ”Letzte Generation” (meaning “the last generation” in German) announced the end of their intensive actions in Austria. The reason? A perceived lack of success in achieving change through their methods.
The group stated, ”We are finishing our announcements.” They claim to have endured violence, threats, and fines amounting to thousands of euros. The Austrian government, they argue, must now take action to address the climate crisis, which they estimate will affect over a billion people.
Social media posts from the Austrian branch suggest their actions have been hampered by increased law enforcement measures.
Streets Blocked, Trevi Fountain Blackened
“The Last Generation” is an environmental activist organization that has been pushing for action against the climate crisis through civil disobedience. Their methods have included blocking traffic and vandalizing art installations. In June 2023, activists poured black water made from charcoal into the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
More recently, activists have targeted airports across Europe, following the hottest day ever recorded. These actions are expected to continue.
No “No-Go” Zone
The escalation of these actions has brought them into conflict with the Austrian government. The government has responded with increased surveillance and legal measures. The ÖVP party, a member of the current coalition government, has stated that there is no legal basis for the activists’ actions and that they will not be tolerated.
The Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, echoed this sentiment, stating, ”No one is above the law, regardless of their cause.”
The Australian branch of “The Last Generation” has recently shut down its activities in the country, suggesting a possible shift in strategy.
