ANKARA. AKP leader and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that Friday, August 2nd, was declared a day of national mourning due to the killing of Hamas Political Bureau Chairman Ismail Haniyeh. Erdoğan stated in a post on his social media account that this decision was made to show support for the Palestinian cause and solidarity with Palestinian brothers.
Victory Party: “We, as the Victory Party, do not accept the national mourning day.”
In the statement titled “Victory Party Press Statement on National Mourning” that the Victory Party sent to the entire press, the statements that began as “We, as the Victory Party, do not accept the declaration of national mourning by the AKP upon the assassination of the Hamas leader.” continued as follows:
“This mourning is not the mourning of the Turkish Nation, but the mourning of a group of fanatic Ikhwanist AKP senior executives. The Muslim Brotherhood organization has given the fanatic Netanyahu government the opportunity to destroy Gaza with its reckless attack. The Muslim Brotherhood, unlike the Palestine Liberation Organization, has not accepted Israel’s right to life and has provided the fanatic religious Israeli cabinet with the opportunity to destroy the Palestinian people with a genocide. Considering that most Arab countries and a significant portion of the Palestinian people do not mourn the Hamas leader; it is a great injustice to expect the Turkish Nation to mourn the Muslim Brotherhood leader who is on the side of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Armenia and the HDP-DEM.”
İYİ Party: “National Mourning cannot be declared according to the President’s whim and authority”
İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu reacted to the declaration of a one-day national mourning for Hamas Political Bureau Chairman İsmail Haniye by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s decision, with a statement from X. Dervişoğlu said: “National mourning cannot be declared according to the President’s whim and authority.”
İYİ Party Leader Dervişoğlu used the following expressions in his post:
“The state has its own practices. A period of national mourning cannot be declared at the pleasure and authority of the President. This is an imposition on the Turkish Nation and is unacceptable. I strongly reject the watering down of important concepts by the state.”
