New Delhi: The situation in India’s neighbour Bangladesh has worsened. On Monday, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and has also left the country. As soon as Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh, the protesters entered the PM’s residence. India has called this entire matter an internal matter of Bangladesh. At the same time, Nobel Prize winner and Bangladeshi economist Mohammad Yunus has expressed disappointment over India’s response. He also said that this unrest can spread to neighbouring countries as well.

Yunus said that when India says that it is their internal matter, I feel sad. Talking to Indian Express, Yunus said that if my brother’s house is on fire, how can I say that it is his personal matter. In diplomacy, there are many ways of saying things other than saying ‘it is their internal matter’.

Mohammad Yunus further said that if there is unrest in Bangladesh, where 17 crore people are in conflict, youth are being killed by government forces, and law and order is deteriorating, then it is clear that the situation will not remain within the borders of Bangladesh and will affect neighboring countries. Yunus is known for his microfinance work, which has lifted millions of people out of poverty there. However, he faced opposition from former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was recently convicted in a corruption case, which his supporters say is politically motivated.

Yunus urged India to support democratic processes in Bangladesh and criticised the lack of transparency in elections. He praised India’s successful elections and expressed sadness at India’s lack of support for democratic goals in Bangladesh. He plans to discuss these issues with the Indian government. Nearly 100 people were killed in Bangladesh on Sunday alone, including 14 police officers.
