One of the easiest ways to lose weight is to reduce your calorie intake and increase your exercise, but some may feel frustrated because they don’t see any noticeable difference or achieve the results they want..

In this regard, personal trainer, nutrition and lifestyle expert, Chloe Thomas, revealed that the reason may lie in what is known as metabolic adaptation.

“A person’s metabolism slows down in response to decreased calorie intake, and this (metabolic adaptation) can make it difficult to continue losing weight or maintain the result for a long time,” she explained..

Thomas referred to the “weight set point” theory, which states that there is a biological control mechanism in the body that regulates the body’s specific weight, by regulating energy intake (by increasing or decreasing appetite) or energy expenditure (by decreasing metabolism or feeling lethargic).

“While your set weight can fluctuate slightly in response to changes in lifestyle habits or environmental factors, the body typically defends this weight range through mechanisms that regulate hunger, energy expenditure and fat storage,” she added. “This control mechanism is influenced by various factors, such as your body composition, metabolic rate, appetite regulation and genetics.”.

“There is a major mistake that people make when trying to lose weight, which is prioritizing cardio over weight training,” she continued. “Those looking to shed excess weight may think that cardio is the best.”.

But fitness expert and online trainer River Hardy says, “Lifting weights actually means your body will burn fat for longer.”.

“Cardio has a special place in your workout routine, but it’s the less important of the two,” he explained. “It’s a great extra tool to burn some extra calories, but the most important part of any workout routine is weight lifting.”.
