Why do we live here when the city is destroying us so much?

When I drove up the Kottbusser Damm on the Neukölln side this morning, it hit me with a vengeance: there aren’t any cars on the road, there are free parking spaces everywhere. There is a table in front of Carik Café, and the same picture is a few meters further in front of La Femme breakfast restaurant. I catch my breath. The time of the big city symphony is usually very fast, but these days Berlin is playing adagio.

Well, two police cars with flashing lights raced from Kreuzberg’s Böckhstrasse, but really they only enhanced the calmness of the holiday because the contrast was so clear. I didn’t make it to the green level at the traffic lights at the intersection of Adalbertstrasse and Oranienstrasse because there were cars parked on both sides and blocking my way. Not so during these holidays, I’m driving recklessly.

The highlight of my commute took place at the intersection of Adalbertstrasse and Engeldamm. The truck driver coming from the right gave me the right of way. I raised my hand and touched me. I swear this has never happened to me before. Or almost never. Slowing down seems to make a person virtuous.

It only fills on local trains that take you out of Berlin

Things go on in the office. After the morning meeting, there are always long lines at the coffee machine and you have to watch the colleagues preparing unusual combinations: first an espresso, then a small oat milk, then a foam pump made from cow’s milk. This button is pressed, then that. He tries to put on a good face on the outside while cooking on the inside. Today I did not get anywhere in any time. And there are many free tables in the open area. There is simply no one sitting to my left.

I have heard similar things from friends, everyone is excited. The only place that is full is the local trains that take you out of Berlin at the weekend. The city is our enemy. Why do we really live here when the big city life, as it really is, wears us down so much?
