Annoying decision: One of the richest people in the world, billionaire Jeff Bezos, has started building a luxury yacht for his own use, but for unconventional reasons this angers many in the Netherlands.
The yacht, which costs almost half a billion dollars, is being built in Elblaserdem – a town near Notre Dame in the Netherlands, but in order to take it out to sea it will have to cross the Koningshavn bridge. The problem? The yacht is too high and will have to break the bridge.
According to the Guardian, the central part of the bridge will be dismantled so that the yacht, which is forty meters high, can pass. The town clarified that Bezos is the one to bear the costs of dismantling and rebuilding the bridge.
Although the cost will be borne by Bezos, residents are not happy. The bridge is considered iconic among the locals, it was first built in 1878, and after the Nazis bombed it it was rebuilt during World War II in 1940.
Just five years ago the bridge was renovated and repaired by the local council, which promised that it would not be dismantled again. As mentioned, the decision angers many of the area’s residents, but the mayor stressed the economic benefits that yacht construction has brought to the area and stressed that the bridge will be rebuilt exactly as its current format.
Bezos’ giant yacht will be called the Y721, it is expected to be about 130 meters long and cost an estimated $ 485 million.
