Hauts-de-France should escape climate change in the future. Temperature records have again been reached in major cities in the south of France such as Toulouse, Lyon or Perpignan this summer. This part of France endured strong heat and heat waves that were particularly difficult to bear, while in the North, in Hauts-de-France, this phenomenon was not as impactful. This milder climate than in the rest of the country will also increase in the years to come according to a press release from INSEE, relayed by France 3 Hauts-de-France.

In the coming decades, “Hauts-de-France would be less affected by episodes of high heat” than the rest of the country. The institute estimates that the average temperature during the months of June, July and August, between 2021 and 2050, was to reach 18.3°C.

An advantageous relief

This temperature difference in Hauts-de-France is due to the lack of relief and its coastline. “The coastal zone of the region would be the most spared, as one moves away from the coast, the heat anomalies would intensify”, explains INSEE.
