Asthma is one of the diseases that, if treated on time, could prevent deaths and poor quality of life for those who suffer from it. It is included in the WHO Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs and in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The forum “Asthma, visibility and commitment” has been held

A year ago, the forum “Asthma, visibility and commitment” was held, which pointed out, among other things, the need to publicize and agree on a greater number of commitments regarding timely diagnosis and quality treatment for those with asthma.

Virginia Molina, chronic disease consultant at the OPM/WHO in Mexicoexpressed that “asthma is among the non-communicable diseases that constitute the main causes of morbidity, mortality, disability and premature death worldwide”.

The implementation of public policies is important

On the other hand, Erick Antonio Ochoa, director of Salud Justa MX, has spoken about the importance of implementing public policies for asthma care, expressing that “asthma control requires strengthening the community of patients and their caregivers, specialists, civil organizations and public decision makers… In the same way, infrastructure and access to medicines must be strengthened, in addition to preventing risk factors: smoking, poor air quality and exposure to wood smoke.”

When the forum ended, Senator Lilia Margarita Valdez Martínez, president of the Health Commission, emphasized that “asthma is a costly disease for those who suffer from it and for the health system, which is why it is important to pay special attention to this condition… We have promoted initiatives and proposals to address different public health problems, for which I promise to continue working hand in hand with organized civil society to address these public health problems that affect Mexico so much.”
