Why is Australia participating in Europe’s music competition?

Her song contest is currently underway Eurovision 2024. The contest held in Malmö, Sweden, 37 countries participate. Among the countries is Australia, which does not belong to Europe.

Australian network SBS broadcasts her singing competition Eurovision in Australia since 1983 and the competition has grown in popularity during that time, largely due to the country’s strong political and cultural ties to Europe. Paying tribute to this, the 2014 semi-final included a guest appearance by Australian singer Jessica Mauboy.

However, over the years, Australian singers have participated in Eurovision as representatives of other countries, such as Olivia Newton-John (1974, United Kingdom), Johnny Logan (1980 and 1987, Ireland), Gina G (1996, United Kingdom Kingdom) and Jane Comerford as the singer of Texas Lightning (2006, Germany).

Australia was first invited to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015 as an invited entrant to celebrate the 60th edition of the competition, automatically qualifying for that year’s final alongside the ‘Big 5’ (France, Germany, Italy , Spain and United Kingdom) and the – then – host country, Austria. Since then, Australia has participated in every edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, and since 2016 has been required to qualify from its semi-final.

However, in 2023, Australia was represented by the band ‘Voyager’ and the song ‘Promise’ – the country qualified for the final, finishing in ninth place with 151 points. However, this year, Australia participated in the first semi-final of Eurovision 2024 with the song ‘One Milkali (One Blood)’ and Electric Fields, which took place on Tuesday (07/05) in Malmö, Sweden, but failed to qualify for the final.
