New Delhi: Former Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi did not respond to the Home Ministry on the question of his citizenship. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who has been continuously raising this issue, has now informed that a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed against Rahul in the Supreme Court. Swamy told in an X post that his associate lawyer Satya Sabharwal has filed the PIL. Swamy shared a Form X on August 10. Swamy has claimed that Rahul Gandhi has declared himself a British citizen in the annual return filed for a British company. Then he also put Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the dock by asking whether Sonia Gandhi is blackmailing him not to take action against Rahul?
On August 12, Swamy shared a post by Jagdish Shetty, national general secretary of Virat Hindustan Sangam. The post claimed that the Modi government is being lenient towards Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. The post said, ‘This is proof that the Modi government is showing leniency towards Rahul and Sonia in the cases related to the National Herald case. Subramanian Swamy had filed the original complaint and both are out on bail. The final appeal by Sonia and Rahul in the related income tax case and the case of vacating the National Herald House is pending in the Supreme Court since 2018, but the government’s Solicitor General or his team of lawyers are not at all interested in taking the case forward.’ Shetty has tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his office and asked why his attitude towards them is so soft today? He wrote, ‘Why are Sonia-Rahul’s cases not being heard promptly as per the rules as is happening with other leaders? The country wants to know this.’
Swami had made another post on August 10 in which he shared the letter sent by the Home Ministry to Rahul Gandhi. He wrote, ‘When Rajnath Singh was the Home Minister, the Ministry had sent this letter to Rahul Gandhi. Now Amit Shah is the Home Minister who has been suppressing this matter since then.’
Swamy has now said in his latest post, ‘When the Home Ministry failed to punish Rahul Gandhi, my colleague lawyer Satya Sabharwal has filed a PIL. The ministry did not even issue a show cause notice to Rahul asking why his citizenship should not be revoked. Rahul Gandhi refused to answer the Home Ministry, so the PIL has been filed.’
In fact, Subramanian Swamy has been alleging for a long time that Rahul Gandhi has declared his citizenship as British as a director in a British company. On August 10, he also posted that form on X in support of his claim. There is no rule of dual citizenship in India. As soon as an Indian citizen takes citizenship of another country, his Indian citizenship automatically ends. In such a situation, Subramanian Swamy’s question is that if Rahul is a British citizen, how is his Indian citizenship intact? If Rahul Gandhi is not an Indian citizen, then how can he contest elections or get any constitutional post?
