World Book Day is celebrated internationally on April 23. This festivity has its origin in 1926. April 23, 1616 is a special date because Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. Also on April 23, other eminent writers such as Maurice Druon, K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla or Manuel Mejía Vallejo were born –or died.

The idea of celebrating Book Day began in Catalonia, when the Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andrés proposed it to the Official Book Chamber of Barcelona in 1923, later approved by King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1926.

October 7, l926 was the first Book Day. However, in 1930 the date of Book Day was set on April 23, the day coinciding with Sant Jordi-Saint George, patron saint of Germany, Aragon, Bulgaria, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, England, Lebanon, Lithuania, Countries Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Mexico. It is part of the tradition to give a rose at the end of a reading, event or proclamation and that lovers and loved ones exchange a rose and a book.

But it took many years to become an international celebration, when it was proposed by the International Union of Editors (UTE), and presented by the Spanish government to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Finally, in 1995 it was approved to proclaim April 23 of each year the “World Book and Copyright Day”.
