why nurses choose temporary work

by time news

They are 25,000 in France, doctors and paramedics combined. In the sights of the government, temporary workers cost more than 1.4 billion euros to public hospitals in 2018. A drift accentuated by the health crisis which the government hopes to remedy with the entry into force, next spring, of the Rist law capping their remuneration. But will this be enough to put these free electrons back on the path of the CDI?

For Thomas Duvernoy, it will take more to convince the paramedics. “Contrary to the image of mercenaries that we want to give them, it is not for the money that the nurses choose the interim”, assures the associate director of the Employment Agency for Health Professions (Agems). Founded in 2005 by nurses, this interim firm interviewed 1,047 nurses in its network, the majority of whom had left a fixed position at the hospital for short contracts.

Holidays that “jump” regularly

Result: 88% first left because of “planning requirements” and “the organization of the service or establishment”, according to the survey (1) published this Wednesday, November 9. “Today, nurses on long contracts have no visibility on their schedule, underlines Thomas Duvernoy, also director of the publication of the online media Actu Soins. Even asked, a leave is never guaranteed, and you can be called the day before to replace an absentee. It’s even common. »

It is this reality that Fanny Pignon wanted to flee by choosing the interim, almost ten years ago. “When I started at AP-HP, in geriatrics, there was one nurse for 40 patients, does she remember. In principle, it was necessary to do one compulsory night watch per week, but as soon as I arrived, I had already been registered for other guards, without asking my opinion. » The management of a healthcare environment “harassing” will end up ” disgust “.

Rather than becoming “bitter” or to leave the profession, Fanny decided to practice it differently. “Today, I am free to choose where and when I work”, Appreciate this milf, who assures not to be “much better paid than before”. “For doctors, the remuneration can triple, but for paramedics, the difference is less, says Thomas Duvernoy. At the AP-HP, for example, a novice nurse is paid €17.50 per hour. In temporary work, it’s €1.30 more, to which is added the precariousness bonus of 10% at the end of the contract”, specifies this former nurse anesthetist, who worked at the hospital for fifteen years.

Less security but more freedom

“We also have the possibility of working more and therefore of earning more if we want to, but we have no leave, no sick leave, and no more step advancements”, raises Yaël Legoux, also converted to the interim since 2018. But for this Aveyronnais, “what matters is being in control of my time. When I was stationary, I couldn’t predict anything. I was obligated to thank you”.

Temporary work is also acclaimed for its diversity. “One day, we are in the emergency room, the next day in orthopedics, the day after in surgery. We discover different hospitals, each with its specificities. It’s a continuous learning process.” boasts Fanny Pignon. No routine. For two years, however, the nurse has been on a mission in the same establishment. A CDI was offered to her, which she declined.

A situation that has become common. “Originally, the interim made up for a short-term absence. Today, it is used more and more often to fill vacancies that do not find takers,” observes Thomas Duvernoy, who recognizes a diversion. While deploring that hospitals do not make more of an effort to “to entice”.

According to the Agems survey, the majority of temporary nurses (58%) have not given up « poser » one day. Provided they are given the time and the means to treat patients properly. “Temporary work is not the cause of the dysfunctions of the hospital, it is the consequence, says Yael Legoux. Until things change, the interim will thrive. »
