Experts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) emphasize that this is not only connected with the protection of Russian interests in the region.

In its analysis, ISW points to an Iranian diplomat telling IranWire that Russia opposes Iranian strikes that could cause civilian casualties given the significant number of Russian citizens in Israel.

At the same time, however, Russia is helping Iran strengthen its air defenses to protect it from Israeli attacks. The New York Times reports that Russia has begun supplying Iran with advanced radars and air defense systems. Iranian media previously noted that Iran was seeking to acquire Russian air defense systems to improve its air defense network.

ISW notes that Russia is expanding its cooperation with Iran, relying on the growing military partnership to influence Western decisions in its favor and deter it from providing further military assistance to Ukraine.

In addition, Russia’s decision to supply Iran with radars and air defense systems that could be useful in Ukraine demonstrates Moscow’s dependence on Tehran for critical weapons, including precision weapons and their components.
