DECRYPTION – The temptation to increase this levy is becoming increasingly strong for local authorities, in a particular financing context.

A small line that startles more than one holidaymaker when paying the bill. When returning the keys to their room this summer, some will have the unpleasant surprise to find that the tourist taxes – set up by most municipalities and whose revenues are used to promote tourism – have increased this year.

The 2023 State budget includes the entry into force of a new additional tax – the amounts of which are backed by the tourist tax – for certain territories. Thus, since January 1, a so-called “regional” tax of 34% has been added to the rate indicated in the departments of Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône and Var. Its revenue will be used to finance a high-speed line (LGV) that will serve the region.
