Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board has been delaying the construction of flats, Collector Krantikumar conducted a surprise inspection yesterday.

On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board, Rs.616.16 crore has been allocated for the construction of 6,888 flats in Coimbatore. Many of the projects funded by the previous ADMK regime are still incomplete. At some places, the work has been halted.

At a recent review meeting on development work chaired by Coimbatore MP Natarajan, MLAs publicly blamed the slow pace of housing construction. As the demand for grants is currently going on in the Assembly, when questions related to this sector arise, there will be a crisis to respond on behalf of the government.

As a precaution, Collector Krantikumar personally inspected the residences being built on Selvapuram, Ukkadam and Variety Hall Road yesterday. He sought an explanation from the department officials regarding the delay in the construction work.

The temple in Variety Hall Road has to be shifted to another place and the next block will be constructed after shifting the fish market in Ukkadam to the waste water farm complex. Executive Engineer Jaganathan, Assistant Executive Engineers Rajendran, Sudarsan and others said that the Selvapuram residential construction work was getting delayed as the North State workers had gone to their hometowns.

The Collector instructed to appoint additional staff and speed up the work.
