Why the price of electricity will soar in February

A drop… but an increase nonetheless. On January 10, the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) delivered its proposal regarding regulated electricity sales prices. These rates will apply to households and small businesses from February 1. The CRE proposed a reduction in the average tariff of 0.35% excluding tax. A figure which takes into account the downward trend in prices on wholesale markets.

Thanks to the relaunch of several nuclear reactors, shut down last year due to corrosion problems, and a jump in production using hydraulic energy, France is producing more electricity. A consultation with the main players in the energy sector will open on January 15.

However, despite this proposal favorable to households and small businesses, there is nothing to indicate that they will pay less for their electricity. Quite the contrary: the government led by Gabriel Attal must now define the tax levels to be applied to this tariff. He is the one who decides. And he had committed, when Élisabeth Borne was at Matignon, to increase them, in his finance law for 2024. The Minister of the Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, however promised that the increase in price, all taxes included, will be at most 10%.

Will the government of Gabriel Attal, former Minister of Public Accounts, choose the top of the range – exactly 10% – to help reduce the public deficit? If this is the option chosen, then French people’s electricity bills will increase by an average of 130 euros, explained in December the office of the current Minister of Public Accounts, Thomas Cazenave. And, over one year, this would mean an increase of 39% – because two increases took place in 2023: a first of 15% in February, then a second of 10% in August. Professionals would see a 6.20% increase in their bill.
