Eleven other people were transported to area hospitals following the mass casualty incident. According to Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses, ten of the injured individuals sustained traumatic injuries. The hospitalizations included five children ranging in age from 5 to 9 years old—specifically a 5-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, two 8-year-old boys, and a 9-year-old girl—as well as five adults between 28 and 68 years old, consisting of a 28-year-old woman, a 32-year-old man, a 59-year-old woman, a 65-year-old woman, and a 68-year-old man. An additional 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for a non-traumatic medical issue.
First responders arriving at the grounds found the truck positioned on the west end of the fields while community members and bystanders were already rendering life-saving assistance to the wounded. Agencies responding to the tragedy included the Wichita Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, and local emergency medical services.
Driver in Custody as Police Investigate Motive
The driver of the black pickup truck was identified as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. Investigators stated that she remained at the scene cooperating with law enforcement while in police custody, and authorities noted no charges had been announced immediately following the crash.
Two juveniles were inside the vehicle with the driver when the truck entered the athletic fields, which are separated from parking zones by fencing and gated entrances. Police believe the woman also had another child participating in a soccer game at the complex, though not on the specific field where the crash occurred. As bystanders rushed to aid victims before emergency crews arrived, an observer recounted hearing a sound resembling a vehicle crashing through objects, prompting parents to frantically search for their children.

Community Response and Suspended Tournament Games
City officials canceled all events at the Stryker Sports Complex until further notice. The facility hosts recreational and competitive youth soccer leagues for participants ranging from under-5 age groups through high school, alongside adult leagues across its 11 outdoor turf fields. At the time of the crash, the complex was also hosting games as part of the Kansas high school girls’ flag football championship, featuring teams from schools such as Shawnee Mission West, Shawnee Mission South, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. James Academy. The Kansas State High School Activities Association suspended its scheduled flag football third-place and championship matches, directing student-athletes, coaches, and spectators to leave the property under the guidance of law enforcement.

School district officials confirmed that no students, staff, or families connected to the Shawnee Mission schools were injured in the incident. State and local leaders expressed grief over the tragedy as investigators turned to public evidence to reconstruct the timeline.
Families came to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon watching their children play soccer. No one could have imagined the tragedy that would unfold.
