Widely used hair products linked to higher risk of cancer, study shows

UNDATED (WKRC) – New research has unveiled an alarming connection between certain widely-used hair products and an increased risk of cancer in women.

A study published in the Journal of Cancer has revealed that permanent hair dyes and chemical straighteners or relaxers might be linked to breast cancer rates. It is estimated that one in three women in the U.S. use permanent dyes, and no associated dangers were found with temporary or semi-permanent colors during the study.

Interestingly, straighteners and relaxers are predominantly used by Black women. Scientists suggest that thick or coarse hair absorbs more dyes, and products specifically designed for Black hair may contain higher levels of hormonally-active compounds and carcinogens.

The study collected data from 46,709 women aged 35-74 over an eight-year period. Results showed that Black women who used dyes at least every five to eight weeks were 60% more likely to develop breast cancer compared to White women, who exhibited an 8% increased risk.

Chemical straighteners and relaxers posed an even greater hazard, with 74% of Black women who used them every five to eight weeks showing an elevated risk, as opposed to only 3% of White women.

Dr. Dale Sandler, coauthor of the study and chief of the NIEHS Epidemiology Branch, emphasized that breast cancer risk is influenced by multiple factors: “We are exposed to many things that could potentially contribute to breast cancer, and it is unlikely that any single factor explains a woman’s risk. While it is too early to make a firm recommendation, avoiding these chemicals might be one more thing women can do to reduce their risk of breast cancer.”

The findings of this study shed light on the potential dangers associated with commonly used hair products. As further research is conducted, it is essential for individuals, particularly those who frequently use permanent dyes and chemical straighteners or relaxers, to remain informed about potential risks and take necessary precautions to prioritize their health.
