Until a few days ago there were three drones that supported the work of the fire brigades in the Tirschenreuth district from the air. This has now become a quartet. The newly added device complements the technical inventory of the support group of the local disaster control operations management (UG ÖEL for short) at the fire department location on Egerstrasse in Wiesau.

The new purchase is worth around 16,500 euros. It was financed with around 14,300 euros in donations from business. The district fire brigade association and the Tirschenreuth district took over the remaining remainder. In addition, the Wiesau market contributed 1,000 euros to the purchase costs.

“Unique concept” in the district

These “great donations” made it possible to realize “the project, which is important not only for us,” emphasized district band councilor Stefan Gleißner at the ceremony marking the official handover of the drone. His special thanks went to Honorary District Fire Officer Andreas Wührl from Wiesau and Honorary District Fire Inspector Lorenz Müller from Waldsassen, who were “significantly involved in initiating this project” and who personally took care of the financing during their service and beyond.

In the presence of many guests of honor, Gleißner assured that the new drone would be “an enormous help” in many ways for the operations of the fire brigade and aid organizations. He also praised the “unique concept” for forming drone task forces in the district. In this context, the district fire council recalled the currently existing drone locations in Erbendorf, Immenreuth, Bärnau and – now new – Wiesau. District fire inspector Klaus Schicker was responsible for “pushing forward” everything.

But it shouldn’t stop at just four locations. Gleißner announced that it is intended to integrate another group of drones into the concept in the “foreseeable future” in order to ensure “efficiency and effectiveness” throughout the entire district. Gleißner praised the committed work of the volunteers, who are constantly continuing their training, as an “irreplaceable heart of our community”.

Technology that is worth the money

“Drones play a special role today and represent a measure of security,” emphasized District Administrator Roland Grillmeier. He thanked the municipalities and their fire departments for their “exemplary performance” for the benefit of everyone. The new purchase contains “a lot of technology, but it is worth the money”.

Before the device could take off into the Wiesau night sky for a test flight, Schicker explained the technical details of the new drone. The executive put the launches of all small aircraft in the district at ten flights in 2022. There are currently 15 (by November 2023). The structure of the existing drone concept is – according to the district fire inspector – “probably unique in the whole of Bavaria”. The new drone is supervised by the trainers from the ÖEL support group in Wiesau, Nico Tretter and Oliver Meyer.

The M30T model, designed in a fire department look, comes from SZ DJI Technology, which operates worldwide. According to a statement from the Tirschenreuth district fire inspection, the aircraft used in fires and person searches in the district all come from this manufacturer. According to Schicker, great importance is attached to ensuring that the devices are identical in terms of equipment when purchasing. The extended area of responsibility of the drones and their pilots also includes dangerous goods operations and “leadership support” in the form of survey flights.
