Earlier last month, a female doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital was raped and murdered. Calcutta has been in turmoil ever since. Along with ordinary people, performers also took to the streets.
Kolkata doctors are protesting, going on strike. Throwing a question to the doctors who are on strike, Trinamool MLA Kanchan Mallick said – ‘Will the government take salary and bonus?’ And Kanchan’s co-artists and common people are angry with this. Kanchan is under fire. In this situation, Kanchan’s current wife Srimayi Chattraj opened up about the matter.
Actress Srimayi spoke to Hindustan Times about the matter. Supporting husband Kanchan’s statement, the actress said, ‘Kanchan wanted to say a very simple thing. He didn’t say anything wrong. For the person who is coming from the district, maybe not the movement, but the people of his house are important to him. If a pregnant woman goes to the hospital with labor pains, she should be operated on immediately. Otherwise, neither mother nor child can be saved.’
Srimayi compared her profession with the medical profession and said, ‘I understand that doctors feel bad. But many times we feel bad, we can’t come out of the commitment. When one of our artists dies, we pray for peace for maybe 1 hour, then go back to the floor. The character also changes. No one mourns 1 year for that character. Many such incidents have happened. If you give an example, it will be controversial. Just as our work is essential, the work of doctors is also an essential service. No patient’s family would want an accident to happen to their family member. All have one purpose and that there should be no death.’

Srimayi said that those who are attacking Kanchan are ‘stubborn’. In his words – ‘Many are talking a lot. Their job is to present their speech. They are really tight. How to vilify a person by throwing a statement into the net of politics is their job. I have seen it everywhere. In my marriage, even when we made love, he said big things. No one judges themselves. First keep your spine straight, then worry about others. They themselves have no backbone. They jump as they get. They don’t really care. He came out again and gave a speech like Antel. It doesn’t matter what these people say. I don’t care about them. They may be good actors or actresses. But their statement does not change the truth.’
Comparing the actors demanding Mamata’s resignation to watermelons, Shrimayi said, ‘There are many who are shouting today, they are anxious to receive the Tele Academy Award when the Chief Minister gives it. Again they are saying today they want the resignation of Mamata Banerjee. I do not understand who they support! Are they like watermelons, one outside, another when cut!’
