A user on the social platform Zhihu reported systemic failures in the Wikipedia donation interface on December 12, 2023. The donor alleged that despite receiving multiple error messages during the process, their bank account was charged four separate times for contributions intended to support the nonprofit organization.
The incident highlights a stark contrast between the nonprofit’s plea for financial support and the actual functionality of its payment gateway. According to a post on Zhihu published at 08:27 by a user identified as Snivellus Snape with an IP location in Shanghai, the user attempted to contribute to a year-end fundraiser in the United States, which claimed that only 2% of readers donate to the free, ad-free service.
Payment Gateway Errors and Duplicate Charges
The donor’s experience began with a prompt stating that on December 12, Wikipedia still cannot be sold, and urging readers not to scroll past the one-minute read. The message apologized for the interruption and noted that it was Tuesday, December 12, and it would soon be too late to help the nonprofit behind Wikipedia in the end-of-year fundraiser in the United States. The appeal suggested that if Wikipedia had given the user $2.75 worth of knowledge,
they should give a contribution, noting that any contribution helps, regardless of whether it is $2.75 or $25.
The user intended to donate $2.75, which, after accounting for taxes, amounted to a higher sum. However, the transaction process was marred by technical failures. After entering their information and clicking the donate button, the user was met with a specific system error stating that there was an error processing the request with the error reference 199824374.1.
Despite these warnings, the financial impact was real. The user reported that they tried several more times without success, yet their bank card account showed a donation record totaling four times, each time for a specific amount. This resulted in a total being transferred, despite the interface repeatedly signaling that the requests had failed.
Donor Frustration and Institutional Trust
The donor expressed frustration that a platform claiming financial hardship would have such a flawed donation page, stating, "If its financial difficulties are truly as described in its donation appeal, why would the donation page have such problems?"
The user explicitly questioned whether Wikipedia had “some malice” involved in the process. Reflecting on the official actions Wikipedia had taken previously, the donor stated, To be honest, I regret it a bit, I feel my enthusiasm was utilized.
This technical failure transformed a gesture of goodwill into a feeling of exploitation. In a follow-up comment on December 12, 2023, the author Snivellus Snape added that they felt a bit like being scammed and fleeced by the Wikipedia Foundation.
The Stakes of Nonprofit Fundraising Infrastructure
For a nonprofit that relies on a small fraction of its user base—specifically the cited 2% of readers—the integrity of the donation pipeline is critical. When a payment system fails to communicate a successful transaction, it creates a high-friction environment that can lead to accidental overpayments and a subsequent loss of trust in the organization’s transparency.
The incident underscores a significant risk for digital nonprofits: the gap between a marketing message of urgency and the technical stability of the tools used to collect those funds. In this case, the technical error did not prevent the transfer of money but did prevent the donor from knowing the transfer had occurred, resulting in quadruple the intended contribution.
