Wikipedia and its other sister ventures, in Hebrew and other languages, were shut down for a short time in the very last minutes, apparently due to a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. This is the third attack recently, after Wikipedia also collapsed briefly on Tuesday and May 24th.

It is not inconceivable that this is an alleged Russian action. The Russian media regulator has threatened Wikipedia with fines of up to 4 million rubles (about $ 49,000) if it does not delete information about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that goes beyond the Kremlin’s version of events, in the Russian government’s latest attempt to limit what the Russian public knows about the war.

Recently, by the way, the Wikimedia Foundation, which manages Wikipedia, announced yesterday (Sunday) that it accepts the results of a recent survey conducted among its editorial community and demanded that it boycott digital currencies due to their negative effects on the world.

“The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to halt the direct acceptance of cryptocurrencies as a means of donation,” wrote Lisa Zeitz-Grovel, vice president of progress at the fund. We make this decision based on recent responses from those communities. Specifically, we will close our Bitpay account, which will eliminate our ability to directly accept cryptocurrencies as a way to donate. ”
