The Democratic Party of Korea launched an all-out offensive against Mr. Lee (former CEO of Black Pearl Investment), who was identified as the “control tower” in the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation case, for explaining that the “VIP” who appeared in the recording was Marine Corps Commander Kim Gye-hwan, saying, “Wouldn’t it be more persuasive to say (the VIP) was Cheon-gong?” In response, the People Power Party argued that the Democratic Party was attempting to manipulate public opinion into a “second fish soup,” and likened it to the Democratic Party’s negative comments about candidate Oh Se-hoon in the 2021 Seoul mayoral by-election.
On the 11th, Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae criticized the “allegations surrounding the rescue of former 1st Marine Division Commander Lim Sung-geun” at a policy coordination meeting, saying, “Mr. Lee made a bizarre explanation (that the VIP is Commander Kim). Is this nonsense or makgeolli? Since when did we start calling the Marine Corps Commander a VIP?” He continued, “They say that neither President Yoon Seok-yeol nor First Lady Kim Kun-hee have ever received any rescue lobbying. Does that mean that it was their voluntary rescue activities?”
The Democratic Party took aim at Ms. Kim, highlighting the fact that Ms. Lee was involved in the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation case. Jin Sung-joon, the floor leader of the policy committee, said, “It seems that the suspicion of external pressure on the investigation is being gathered to be Ms. Kim,” and “Ms. Kim has been selected as a witness for the hearing of the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee, so I urge her to appear in person and state the truth about the lobbying allegations as they are.”
Floor leader Park also said about Ms. Kim’s alleged involvement in the operation of the comment team and party affairs, “Even if she is the president’s spouse, she is just a civilian, and for an unauthorized civilian to interfere in state affairs is an abuse of power.”
People Power Party Secretary-General Sung Il-jong criticized the Democratic Party’s allegations, saying, “It’s not the first or second time that the Democratic Party has been the base for rumors and manipulation.” Secretary-General Sung cited the “Kim Dae-up case,” in which allegations were raised about the military service evasion of the son of then-Grand National Party candidate Lee Hoi-chang during the 2002 presidential election, the mad cow disease scandal, the rumor about the treatment of contaminated water from Fukushima, and former Emergency Response Committee Chairman Han Dong-hoon’s “allegations of late-night drinking parties in Cheongdam-dong” as representative cases. Jeong Cheom-sik, the policy committee chairman of the same party, also claimed, “(The circumstances surrounding the acquisition of Lee’s transcript by the Senior Public Officials’ Corruption Investigation Office) are ‘the second Yoon Seok-yeol’s coffee incident’ in that they were made public after the police announced the results of the Marine Corps soldier’s death on duty case.” He likened it to the false interview reports by Kim Man-bae and Shin Hak-rim that “then-prosecutor Yoon Seok-yeol gave coffee to a loan broker in Daejang-dong during the investigation of the Busan Savings Bank case in 2011.” Vice Chairman Jeong said, “The Democratic Party should immediately stop its ‘if-then’ political offensive and focus on the issue of the people’s livelihood, which former leader Lee Jae-myung emphasized (in his declaration to run for party leader).”
