Wildfire Resurges in Smyrna, Threatening Homes and Lives Amid Strong Winds

by time news

The fire, which has been burning for over 26 hours in the mountainous area north of the Kordelio neighborhood in Izmir, has rekindled and reached residential areas.

Strong northern winds are blowing in the area, and the flames have turned the sky of Izmir red, while the atmosphere is suffocating due to the smoke.

In Kordelio, residents from two neighborhoods have been evacuated from their homes, while on the opposite side of the mountain, towards the Aydın side, another village has been evacuated.

According to the official tally, 16 houses have burned so far, and in the afternoon, the fire had consumed facilities in the industrial zone. Television networks are broadcasting images of a ten-story apartment building with its roof on fire.

For a moment in the afternoon, it seemed that the fire was under control; however, it rekindled later due to the strong winds.

The Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumaklı, is rushing to Izmir to inspect the firefighting efforts.
