Fire Ravages Mount Menikio in Serres
The fire continues to burn in the Hania area of Mount Menikio in Serres, with firefighters battling multiple fronts.
With the first light of day, aerial units, including three helicopters, are dropping water in the area of “Hania” of Mount Menikio, where a fire broke out yesterday afternoon due to lightning. The fire is ongoing in a rugged and steep area at an altitude of 1400 meters, in a pine-covered region, but far from inhabited areas.
Firefighting vehicles cannot reach the area, and ground teams, supported by aerial resources, are working to contain the flames. While there is currently no strong wind, firefighters are vigilant to prevent the fire from “escaping” into the ravine present in the area.
Ten firefighters are working in the area with five vehicles, while three foot teams from the 2nd and 7th Special Forest Operations Unit have been mobilized to bolster the efforts.
Five Fires in One Day
Yesterday was a busy day for firefighters, as four fires broke out across the region. All four fires are believed to be caused by lightning. The affected areas include Dafnoudi, Lithotopos, Kefalohori, behind the former Papaloukas military camp in Serres, and Mount Orvilos at the Greek-Bulgarian borders.
In Dafnoudi, firefighters remained throughout the night to address rekindling fires, which had already consumed approximately 500 acres.
