The new grading system, which aims to end the unlimited improvement of test grades, was postponed for a year, but some schools already implemented it in the previous school year, admitting that it was the right move. In general, of the schools surveyed by the State Service of Education Quality that have not done so, 5% are not ready to do so, and 65% are partially ready. School managers also indicate that the procedure should be further clarified.
Students will not be compared Fearing that not all schools are ready for the new system, it was postponed for a year, allowing educational institutions to decide for themselves whether or not to wait until the official start. Those who decided to do so have already been using the new assessment for a year, but it will have to be implemented on September 1 for the others as well, Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša (JV) emphasized at the meeting of the Saeima’s Education, Culture and Science Commission, adding that in August the Ministry of Education and Culture will provide up-to-date information to education authorities and schools about the improvement of the new system, as well as survey schools on what support they need by the end of this year.
Schools 2030 Head of Curriculum Development, Director of Riga 72nd Secondary School Pāvels Pestovs pointed out that in the new system, the emphasis is on assessment that supports students’ growth, rather than determining the result, and the grade should accurately reflect the student’s acquired knowledge, skills and understanding.
