On Monday, on the eve of the NATO summit in Washington, Russia launched a massive missile attack in Ukraine using Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, among other weapons. A total of at least 41 people were killed and more than 170 injured in the wave of strikes across the country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Russia launched more than 40 different types of missiles into Ukraine. During the strikes, residential buildings, infrastructure, and a children’s hospital were damaged.
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby emphasized during a press conference that the US will continue to prevent Ukraine from striking deep into Russia with American weapons.
But President Joe Biden promised “new measures” to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and said the US and its allies would present the new aid at a NATO summit in Washington on Tuesday.
At the time, Russia said it would closely monitor the NATO summit, which will be attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other world leaders.
V. Zelensky, in turn, turned to the West after the Russian attack. “The whole world must use all its resolve to finally put an end to Russia’s strikes.” V. Putin carries the killing. Only together can we bring true peace and security,” he wrote on social media.
