Will coffee become illegal? The Ministry of Health is on the way to a dramatic step

After Canada’s health experts issued new guidance that drinking more than two alcoholic drinks a week could be harmful to health, new research from the University of Toronto says excessive coffee consumption is also a cause for concern and the country’s health ministry may be taking action.

“These findings indicate that heavy coffee consumption is associated with an increased risk of kidney dysfunction among slow metabolizers of caffeine, which genetically make up about half of the population,” reads a section of the data, adding that diseases such as hypertension may appear.

“We made a discovery back in 2006 with a case-control study, where we showed that coffee increases the risk of heart attack, but only in those who have a certain version of a gene that causes them to effectively slow down the metabolism of caffeine.” Ahmed Al-Sohami, Professor of Nutritional Sciences in the Tamerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. “People with slow metabolisms are less able to get rid of caffeine efficiently from the body, so it is more likely to have negative effects on people who can’t get rid of it.”

“Often, when I’m giving a talk, someone will say, ‘Oh, I’m definitely a slow metabolizer, because if I drink a cup of coffee in the afternoon it keeps me up at night,'” Al-Sohami said. “But right now there is no connection in terms of these types of physiological responses to caffeine and the speed of metabolism.”

“I would advise people to just assume they have a slow metabolism and limit consumption to one cup a day,” explained Al Suhami. Last month, researchers from the University of Quebec said that reducing coffee consumption could fight climate change by reducing pollution.
