The ICC has decided India as the venue for the ODI World Cup to be held in 2023. But current reports indicate that there is a possibility of going back on this decision. It is clear that the reason behind this is the tax issues with the central government.
India did not give any kind of tax incentives to the ICC during the 2016 T20 World Cup as well. Various reports say that India will take the same stand this time too. It is the policy of the ICC to procure necessary tax concessions from the respective governments of the host country.
In 2016, the BCCI lost Rs 190 crore (US$22 million) after the government refused benefits. ICC was collecting this amount from BCCI’s revenue surcharge. The case in this regard is still pending before the ICC Tribunal.

If India rejects tax incentives for the 2023 ODI World Cup as well, the ICC and BCCI are likely to be in deep trouble again. The ICC has demanded that the issue be resolved before the 2023 World Cup.
However, India has not yet responded on this issue. What will the government say to the tax paying citizens?. Will cricket, one of India’s major sports, be exempted from taxation? Questions are also being raised.

But reports say that India will follow the same stance as in 2016. BCCI has three options in this situation. One is to convince the members to leave the tax. Two, move the 2023 Cricket World Cup from India. Three, the ICC can deduct that amount from India’s share, as it did in 2016.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Rameez Raja has accused the International Cricket Council (ICC) of not taking necessary steps to ensure that India-Pakistan cricket relations progress well and resolve issues between the two countries. Rameez Raja’s remarks come amid discussions about whether the Indian team will come to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup and Pakistan to India for the ODI World Cup in India. The World Cup is scheduled to be held in India between October and November 2023.
