The invitation to the gala dinner at the G-20 summit in New Delhi causes a stir. In it, India is referred to as “Bharat”. The opposition fears the government could rename the country.

In preparation for the G-20 summit in New Delhi next weekend, the first invitations to the official gala dinner have been sent out. The letter, which is now causing a stir in India, is as stately as the occasion demands.

In the center is the national coat of arms of India, a symbol of several lions on an ornate lotus base. “On the occasion of the G-20 summit,” says the header above. Below, right after the lion crest, are the words that have now become the catalyst for a great debate in India: “The President of Bharat has the honor of enjoying your company…” it reads. Then follows the name of the invited person. In addition to the heads of state and government from twenty leading industrial and emerging countries, high-ranking diplomats and politicians are also invited to the dinner. There is nothing wrong with the tone and presentation of the invitation as published by numerous media outlets in India.
