Calculate the payment you should receive if you work on the holiday

Assumption Day is considered among the days of paid leave according to the Labor Code of Guatemala, Decree 1441 of the Congress of the Republic. Article 128 of this regulation establishes that “in companies where work of a very special nature or of a continuous nature is carried out, as determined by the regulation, […] You can work during holidays or weekly rest days, but in these cases the worker has the right to be paid for the time worked, without prejudice to the salary for such holiday or weekly rest, and it will be counted as overtime work.

That is why, if you have to work on August 15, you will be paid for that day as if you had worked overtime. The calculation is simple. First, you must divide your monthly salary by 30 (days of the month) to obtain the daily salary. Then, this value is multiplied by 1.5 to include the additional 50% corresponding to overtime work.

For example, if your monthly salary is Q4,500.00, the calculation would be as follows:

  • Monthly salary: Q4,500.00
  • Daily salary: Q4,500.00 ÷ 30 = Q150.00
  • Payment for holiday worked: Q150.00 × 1.5 = Q225.00

The total payment you will receive for working on Assumption Day would be Q225.00, of which Q150.00 is the daily salary you usually receive and Q75.00 is the additional amount for overtime work.
