As announced by the European air navigation service provider (NOTAM), the airspace will be closed for non-commercial flights until the end of October.

“We are trying to communicate with the air navigation staff in order to know whether the restrictions will really be applied until October 31,” Vytautas Sviderskis, president of the Federation of Lithuanian Airmen, told LRT radio.

He also noted that the restrictions imposed are minimal and include a ban on hot air balloon flights.

“The flight plan was canceled on Friday afternoon, it’s about 10 balloons. On Saturday, Sunday – 5 balloons”, said the President of the Federation of Airmen.

For his part, the head of the Air Navigation Technical Activity Department, Modestas Pikutis, said that the aim is to fix the fault as soon as possible, and added that the situation does not affect commercial flights.

“I want to emphasize that not in the entire airspace, but the restriction of flights is applied only in the air traffic control zone of the Vilnius airport and only partially to the minimum extent necessary to ensure flight safety. The situation is normal, just minimal restrictions to ensure flight safety. This does not affect commercial aviation,” said M. Pikutis.
