Edappadi Palaniswami has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court requesting the Election Commission to approve an amendment made to the AIADMK rules. This comes as the Election Commission has yet to approve the amendment. The Delhi High Court has scheduled a hearing for the petition.

Since the passing of Jayalalithaa, there has been a series of changes in the AIADMK. The OBS-EPS merger in 2017 led to the creation of the Coordinator-Joint Coordinator position with O Panneer Selvam as coordinator and Edappadi Palaniswami as co-coordinator. However, during a General Assembly meeting in June last year, there was a call for single leadership, leading to a fierce competition between O Panneer Selva and Edappadi Palaniswami for the leadership post. Edappadi Palaniswami was ultimately elected as interim General Secretary during an AIADMK general meeting in July 2019. During the meeting, it was also resolved to abolish the Coordinator-Co-Coordinator posts and remove O Panneer Selvam from AIADMK. O Panneer Selvam contested this decision in the Supreme Court, but the court ruled in favor of proceeding with the General Assembly.

Amidst this ongoing situation, AIADMK released an election notification for the position of AIADMK General Secretary. O Panneer Selvam sought an injunction from the Madras High Court, but his plea was rejected. Subsequently, Edappadi Palaniswami was elected as AIADMK General Secretary without contest. However, Election Commission documents still refer to coordinators, prompting Edappadi Palaniswami to file a petition in the Delhi High Court, seeking approval of the amendments made to the AIADMK rules. The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear this petition on Monday.

Delhi: Edappadi Palaniswami has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court asking the Election Commission to approve the amendment made in the AIADMK rules. This petition has been filed by Edappadi Palaniswami when the Election Commission has not yet approved the amendment made in the AIADMK rules. The Delhi High Court has announced the date for hearing the petition.

After the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, there have been various changes in the AIADMK. After the merger of OBS-EPS teams in 2017, the post of Coordinator-Joint Coordinator was created. While O Panneer Selvam was working as the coordinator and Edappadi Palaniswami as the co-coordinator, the slogan of single leadership was raised in the General Assembly held in June last year.

Due to this, there was a fierce competition between O Panneer Selva and Edappadi Palaniswami to capture the leadership post. Edappadi Palaniswami was elected as the interim General Secretary in the AIADMK general meeting convened on July 11 last year. Similarly, the resolution was passed that the posts of Coordinator – Co-Coordinator will also be abolished and O Panneer Selvam will be removed from AIADMK. Opponent O Panneer Selvam went all the way to the Supreme Court. However, the court ruled that the General Assembly will proceed. Meanwhile, AIADMK released the election notification of AIADMK General Secretary. OPS filed a petition seeking an injunction from the Madras High Court.

The Madras High Court heard the plea and rejected the OPS plea. Subsequently, Edappadi Palaniswami has been elected as AIADMK General Secretary without contest. In this situation, Edappadi Palaniswami has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court to order the Election Commission to approve the amendments made in the AIADMK rules. The Delhi High Court will hear this petition on Monday. Even though the post of General Secretary was brought back in the AIADMK, the Election Commission documents still mention coordinators. Therefore, Edap Palaniswami has filed this petition.
