Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences following the incident with Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, Deadline reported, citing the actor’s statement.
The incident came after a prank by the host of the ceremony, about the hairstyle of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Later, Will Smith came on stage and punched Rock in the face.
Smith stated that his behavior at the ceremony was shocking, painful and inexcusable. According to him, he insulted both Chris Rock himself and his entire family, as well as those present at the ceremony and watching the awards around the world.
Smith said in a statement that he “betrayed the trust of the Academy and made it impossible for other nominees and winners to receive congratulations.” Will Smith said he is ready for the consequences of his behavior and refuses membership in the US Film Academy.
Earlier, the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the start of disciplinary proceedings against the actor.
