Renowned American actor Will Smith has announced his resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences following an incident involving him at the Oscars, Variety reported on Saturday, April 2.

Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars this week for making a bad joke about the actor’s wife. Will Smith called his actions “shocking, insulting and inexcusable”, adding that he is ready to accept any additional consequences that the Academy’s board of governors deems necessary.

“The list of people I have offended is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, everyone in attendance and spectators around the world. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and receive congratulations for their outstanding job. I’m heartbroken,” Smith said.

Film Academy accepts Smith’s resignation

Film Academy President David Rubin has announced that Will Smith’s resignation has been accepted. He added that the leadership of the academy will continue the disciplinary proceedings against Smith.

At the 94th Academy Awards, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock when he joked about Smith’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who shaved her head due to alopecia, a pathological hair loss. The comedian compared her to G.I. Jane, after which Smith went on stage and slapped Rock in the face. The comedian did not go to the police. After the incident, Smith apologized to The Rock, the academy, participants and spectators of the ceremony.
