The Netflix adaptation of The Witcher reaches its third season with a big problem to be solved: Henry Cavill will leave the role of Geralt, protagonist of the series, in the fourth season. The Witcher Season 3 Plot (SPOILERS!)

The start of season three hasn’t brought much change: everyone on the Continent is still bent on finding Ciri (Freya Allan), a young princess with mysterious powers that could be the key to uniting a vast and violent world. Kings, wizards, elves – they all want to find her for their own nefarious reasons. Despite this, she finds herself in a rather cozy situation, living with Geralt and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra).

Still on the run, moving at the slightest sign of danger, they’ve also settled into a comfortable family routine, sharing meals and washing dishes, while Yenn – who has finally regained her magic after being tragically bereft last season – tries to teach Ciri to control. your powers. After two seasons of nothing but death and betrayal, it’s refreshing to see the three of them living calm, happy lives.

But, of course, peace doesn’t last long in The Witcher. Outside forces force the small family unit to break up. Yenn takes Ciri to Aretuza’s magic academy hoping to help her learn and keep her safe, while Geralt pursues Rience (Chris Fulton), a fire-wielding mage who is after Ciri at the behest of a mysterious benefactor. There’s still a fair amount of political maneuvering and betrayal to go along with.

This season, we see a notable change in Jaskier (Joey Batey), who goes back to being a free spirit who cracks a lot of jokes, often at the wrong moment. This time he has a rivalry with another bard and an intense crush on a prince. He looks like Dandelion again, despite the hair and eyeliner.

What We Know About the End of Henry Cavill’s Geralt

While there’s a lot going on, volume one of the new season is essentially about one thing: revealing who the big new villain is. The first batch of episodes ends with a party, which is seen from multiple perspectives, forcing you, along with Geralt and Yenn, to sift through the lies, detours and illusions as a band sings, “All is not what it seems”. The secret villain’s big reveal was genuinely surprising.

The Witcher producers have said Cavill’s transition to Hemsworth will be “pretty seamless”. But still, this season is an important send-off for this version of the character – and it’s setting this version of Geralt up for one big final showdown. At the same time, this season is also something of a return to form, bringing The Witcher back to the things that make it unique – it’s funny, bloody and sexy.

Anyway, we’ll have to wait for the second part of the season to draw solid conclusions regarding the transition from Cavill to Hemsworth in the role of Geralt (and whether it will be properly justified). However, the path charted so far is promising and the series looks more engaging and interesting compared to the second season.
