a new tropical cyclonic is active in the Pacific Oceanclose to the southern coast of Mexico, which could raise doubts about whether it could affect the country. Below we share the information provided by the Insivumeh and the United States Hurricane Center about the effects of Tropical Depression Eleven-E in Guatemala.

Will Tropical Depression Eleven-E affect Guatemala?

Yesterday the National Hurricane Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed that the low pressure system that had been monitored in the Pacific Ocean has become a tropical depression, known as tropical depression Eleven-Elocated near the coasts of Mexico.

Since this system is located within the warning area of the tropical cyclone operational plan, the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology ―Insivumeh― is monitoring it closely, as its location could generate effects in Guatemala.

In its special meteorological bulletin #35-2024, issued on Wednesday, October 2, Insivumeh detailed that tropical depression Eleven-E does not represent danger to Guatemalan territory, since the system is moving away to the west. However, due to the circulation of the system, humidity will be entering the country. This will generate rains, drizzles and electrical activityespecially during the afternoon and evening hours in the southern, central and western regions of Guatemala.

The institution also highlights that the soils are saturated due to persistent rains in recent weeks. This condition, combined with expected rainfall, could pose a risk in vulnerable areas.

Insivumeh update this October 3, 2024:

Depression could intensify into Storm Kristy

At 8:00 am this Wednesday, October 2, the National Hurricane Center indicated that tropical depression Eleven-E is located approximately 115 kilometers southwest of Puerto Ángel, Mexico, and maintains maximum sustained winds of approximately 55 kilometers per hour, with more intense gusts.

The system is currently moving southwest and is expected to turn northwest overnight, maintaining its path through Friday. There is a chance it will strengthen before reaching the coast, becoming a tropical storm on Wednesday afternoon or evening. When it intensified into a storm it would be named Kristy, this being the eleventh storm to occur in the Pacific Ocean.

According to the NOAA forecast, heavy rains are expected in southern Mexico and Guatemala throughout this week. These precipitations could cause flooding and landslides, especially in areas with steep terrain in western Guatemala and in the Mexican states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco and the coast of Guerrero.

Recommendations to the population

Given the current situation, Insivumeh recommends that the population pay attention to the updates issued by the institution and take precautions due to the predicted rains. Warnings are given about the possibility of floods, sudden river flooding, mass movements, lahars in the volcanic chain and damage to the country’s infrastructure and road network.
