New Delhi: The Indian team is currently playing a Test series with Bangladesh, but more than that, the Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia is being discussed. The 5-match Test series between India and Australia will start in November this year and will run till January. Meanwhile, a round of discussions has started regarding the selection of the Indian team. It is reported that another pacer will be brought in the team in place of Yash Dayal, who is included in the series against Bangladesh. In fact, the last and final round of the 2024 Duleep Trophy ended in Anantapur on Sunday, in which India-A defeated the Rituraj Gaikwad-led-C team to win the domestic red-ball title. Meanwhile, India D secured a consolation win after Arshdeep Singh took a career-best 6 wickets for 40 runs in a 257-run win against the B team.
A report has claimed that former Australia captain Ian Chappell has pushed for a left-arm fast bowler to be selected in Team India. That could be Arshdeep Singh. Chappell has stressed the need for a left-arm fast bowler in the Indian Test set-up to improve their chances of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
He wrote in a column- If Mohammed Shami is fit for Australia, nothing will be better than this, but the presence of a good left-arm fast bowler will also add variety to India’s attack. In the first two rounds, Khalil Ahmed emerged as a promising player for India among left-arm bowlers, but in his absence for the third round, Arshdeep gave his best for the last game and took 9 wickets for 40 runs for India D.
Arshdeep, who took only four wickets in the first two rounds of the tournament, dismissed Mushir Khan, Suryakumar Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy in the first innings and took 3 wickets for 50 runs, while he took 6 wickets in the second innings. If Arshdeep continues his form in the Ranji Trophy season starting next month, he can also overtake Yash Dayal to make it to the Indian team for the Australia tour in December. Suryakumar and Shreyas Iyer are still a matter of concern, but Sanju Samson has presented his claim by scoring a century.
Arshdeep Singh bowled 12 consecutive overs, took 6 wickets and led his team to victory
Both the senior middle order batsmen from Mumbai will have to wait for their chance to return to the Indian Test team after a disappointing performance in the Duleep Trophy. Iyer, who was dropped from the Indian team in the middle of the home series against England in February this year, scored just 154 runs in six innings, including two ducks.
