Alexander Zverev is knocked out of the Wimbledon round of 16 after taking a clear lead. The German misses another great opportunity. His generation may have played a role.
Alexander Zverev was trying to reach the final of the grass classic at Wimbledon for the first time in his career. But his dream is broken. On Monday (LIVETICKER for reading) the German number one lost against the 13th seed, Taylor Fritz, 2:3 in sets.
The Germans won the first set 6:4. The game started evenly, both players made their serves before the score was 4:4. Then Zverev showed all his quality and took Fritz’s serve. With the upper hand, he served without any problems to win the series.
Zverev is struggling with himself
The second set was matched in an even way. Both opponents performed well, so that the score was tied at 6:6. Zverev set the tone there. Fritz, on the other hand, made repeated mistakes. As a result, the Germans won the tiebreak 7:4 and also took the second set. This was followed by emotional laughter.
The 27-year-old then managed to bring up the third set. There, too, the two played very evenly until the score was 4:4, and neither managed to break out. But then Fritz got a break and then performed to win the set. Then Zverev struggled on his own.
Round 16 is a drama
After briefly fading, there was no sign of him in the fourth set. The two opponents did not give each other anything, but again the decision was made at the end of the series. When the score was again 4:4, Zverev showed strong nerves because after being 0:30 behind on his own, he turned the game around and eventually won it.
But Fritz was able to fight this and then made it 5:5. At this point the game turned into a thriller. The German took the lead again with his own serve, but Fritz was able to equalize immediately. This went into the second series break. In this, the American was sure across the board and won 7:3, which means it’s 2:2 in the sets.
In the deciding sentence, Zverev looked sluggish and tired. He may have noticed his knee injury. Fritz quickly made it 4:1. The 27-year-old was no longer able to get on the road and was no longer able to put his opponent under pressure. In the end, Fritz served for the win 6:3 and 3:2 in the sets.
