As an important feature of the next major update of Windows 11, Microsoft explained the new design and function of the task manager, and explained why it abandoned the tab-based interface in favor of the hamburger menu.

Microsoft wants the Task Manager to follow the design principles set by the Modern UI framework and Windows 11. This new interface is clean in many ways, and Microsoft hopes to follow the same principles for the Task Manager.

By switching to the hamburger menu, Microsoft is also hoping to simplify the navigation system and make the overall experience consistent with Windows 11. You can click the hamburger menu and flip through pages, or use the Ctrl + Tab keys to flip through pages, so the new design is definitely keyboard and accessible.

Another noticeable change is the new settings page, which can be used to toggle between dark/light mode and also set the default login page. Regarding the status icon in the Task Manager, Microsoft said it decided to replace the pause icon with a pause icon to reduce clutter.

In terms of functionality, there is a newly added feature called “Efficiency Mode” which will help you throttle CPU resources for a specific process. Microsoft’s program administrator responsible for Task Manager said: “When you usually play with Windows, there must be a specific process or application that uses a lot of resources (CPU). In the past, we always had only one option, and that was through task manager to terminate it”.

“You can actually use efficiency mode, which not only throttles your CPU resources, but also improves your UI responsiveness”. Currently, Task Manager’s high-efficiency mode can only throttle CPU-intensive apps, but Microsoft is also exploring support for memory and network usage, which could be enabled in a future release.
