If you were thinking about changing your computer, you are probably looking for a new processor that is better suited to your needs, especially if you want to run games. But it’s best to read this before making that investment, because you might not need it if you already have a relatively modern AMD processor.

Starting today, Windows 11 users can now install an update that improves the performance of AMD processors; and best of all, we don’t have to pay a single euro to implement this enhancement.

An improvement that, ironically, comes with controversy. It all started when the first tests of the new generation of Ryzen processors were published; expectations were sky-high due to AMD’s promises that the new models were 16% faster than the previous generation, and that the Ryzen 9950X was going to be the new most powerful processor in the world. Promises that were dashed when the first independent tests were published revealing that the improvement was minimal; in some cases, the new processors even performed worse than the previous ones.

After an investigation, AMD discovered that Windows 11 was to blame; specifically, the thread scheduler and branch prediction, which anticipates the upcoming tasks to optimally send them to each core of the processor. In other words, Windows 11 was not taking advantage of the AMD processor cores as it was with Intel’s, for example.

Initially, the solution to this problem was set to be implemented in the upcoming major update of Windows 11, version 24H2; but fortunately, it has been decided to expedite the release of this patch and roll it out directly to all users of the latest version of Windows 11, version 23H2.

Tests with the new patch do not lie: the performance improvement is spectacular. With an updated system, Hardware Unboxed has reported improvements of up to 35% in some games, which means that the new processors not only meet AMD’s promises, but in some cases, even exceed them.

But the best news is that older AMD processors also benefit from these improvements; tests with the Ryzen 7000 processors have reported enhancements that can reach 11% in some games. There are even discussions that, theoretically, some Intel processors could also benefit from the patch, although this has not yet been tested.

To install the new patch that improves Windows 11 performance, we need to click on the start menu and enter Settings. On the left side, go to ‘Windows Update’, and click on ‘Check for updates’; although it is very likely that the program already shows a message that the update is available. Specifically, we are interested in installing update KB5041587 which is gradually reaching all users.
